The Church of St Colomban des Villards is located in the Chief town. Find the possible guided tours in the entertainment program.
The church of Saint-Colomban-des-Villards is located in Savoie, in the Maurienne valley. It was erected following the attachment of the Duchy of Savoy to France by the Treaty of Turin (March 24, 1860).
At the time, the building met the need for a place of worship for a population of approximately 1600 inhabitants.
The original plans for the church were signed on July 25, 1862 by the diocesan architect Joseph Marie Samuel Revel. The work was completed four years later.
In neo-Gothic style, this church replaces another older one, Romanesque, which has become unsanitary, which was located in the old cemetery of the town.
The building has undergone many embellishments over the centuries.
But in 1981, it suffered significant damage caused by the blast of an avalanche.
Today, a team of local volunteers, brought together under the aegis of the Notre Clocher association, is working to save and restore this building.
